D i f f e r e n t i a t e d  F u n c t i o n a l  S t a t e s

Adopted from Igor Kalinauskas book "Alone with the World"
Translation by I. Shpigelman, 2006

People interact with each other using psychic energy whether they are aware of it or not. The only valid stand regarding such interactions is to have abundance of the energy and not to concern oneself with the details of how it is used, not to analyse all the time who and how influences you with their energy. You must live in such a way that, in your presence other people feel good. It is a stand that was tested by life-long experience, and I believe that any other opinion in this matter is simply a pathology.

Common principles of self-regulation

Pretty much everyone heard of auto-training. A strange thing happens to it. Auto-training sessions are given in many different places, from workplaces to resorts. Yet, only very few individuals actually do it by themselves. There are plenty of books on this subject. Yet there are very few people who practice it on a regular basis. In most cases the ones who do, require it for their functional, practical needs.
It is quite possible that it will be all the same with the most advanced technique, because it is a common law of human activity: a man will do something new only if his customary set of means does not work anymore. The customary set of means is the set that was acquired through the socialization process, education, apprenticeship and communications. The man does not give a second thought when using those means - they are customary rather then specialized.

For instance, in the indeterminate situations, it may be customary for a man to spin a coin in order to make a decision. And it turns out that it is not so senseless as it may seem. Once an interesting experiment was made: the captains of the trawlers ships were offered to toss the coin every time they were uncertain in their choice of the fishing area. And it turned out that they had a 15% increase in the yield that year. Such a trifle made such a result.

There exist a well-known auto-suggestion system in its classical form - a wedding ring is suspended on a silk thread and then used for divination. The result is interpreted depending on the movements of the ring - along, across, in circles, and so on. This is so called "talking pendulum". There is also a "talking cane" and a relatively new invention - a frame.

The experiments that were made independently in different countries have proved that all the above objects act as amplifiers toward the information that the operator receives on a subconscious level, that is, they all amplify the informational output, rather than input. Or, in other words, the operator does not receive any more information through the ring, but rather, the ring amplifies the information that he already has, but is not capable of transmitting it. And whether the pendulum will transmit the right or the wrong answer depends only on the amount of unaccounted information in the operator himself.

The pendulum amplifies this weak signal up to 10 times, the frame amplifies it in 100 - 200 times. Sometimes a well trained, professional operator can achieve 1000 times amplification. But a conscious visualization may yield up to 10,000 times amplification. Therefore, a man might see in his dream something that will help him to solve a complicated problem due to the fact that a visualization is a very effective way of amplification of weak signals. Thus, we may say that self-regulation is a vast area of activity directed toward oneself.

It might be an activity governed by a certain program, or an activity directed toward a certain end-product, or an activity directed toward control over certain characteristics of ourselves according to a given technical requirements. But in each case we face the following three tasks:

  1. To find in ourselves something already existent but not recognized.
  2. To form something that does not exist yet, but what is good to have
  3. To perfect the control over ones own inner world

These are different types of activities. When we talk of self-regulation, we mean two large and quite different areas of activity. Namely, the activity directed toward self-modifications according to a certain model, and the activity directed toward self-control over certain functional capabilities that are already present but not yet activated. Accordingly, any self-regulation technique is based on the former or the latter model.

Differentiated Functional States Technique

The Differentiated Functional States technique (DFS), or, simply speaking the technique of psycho-energetic resonance is built upon discovery and structuring of those vague, little realized elements of our perception that may be described with the notions of energy, subconscious sensitivity, emotional sphere.

How this technique is formed? Our deep belief is that the end-product of any self-regulating technique is the changes that are made by it in the self-concept of the student. By analyzing these changes, it is possible to conclude with high degree of probability which type of self-regulation technique you have practiced. Therefore, we purposely start with the question, what needs to be introduced to the self-concept in order to obtain the ability to control the structure of emotional, sensual and psycho-energetic perception?

The solution of this task required to introduce the notion of the instrumental component of the self-concept. This notion, illustrated by various descriptions was born millenia ago. The notion of trinity body-soul-spirit or the ancient Chinese system of the three tanks, or classification of energy by the principle earth, man, heaven. The trinomial division exists in all cultures since the old days, and everywhere the following three types of human activity are defined:

  1. vital - mainly the muscular, physical activity.
  2. psycho-emotional - mainly the emotional activity.
  3. mental - mainly the cognitive activity.

In order to successfully solve the problems in the area of psycho-energetics, we should introduce this so called instrumental component into the self-concept. That is, our body becomes an instrument, our psycho-emotional sphere becomes an instrument, and our consciousness becomes an instrument. An instrument in a sense that we can say about it "I can do this and that with it."

Let is suppose that I can think in a three different manners, or I can activate my memory to a certain known extent, or I can calculate with a speed of a mainframe - these all are the specifications of my consciousness as an instrument. But these are the overall specifications. Why is it important? Because when we talk about the three types of activities, it is not the same as the three instruments themselves.

All three types of activity, vital, sensual, and mental may be present in each of the three instruments.

Such an approach has been existing in spiritual traditions for a long time. It is described in quite a similar way by P. Uspenskii when he talks about G. Gurgiev system in terms of psycho-technological tradition. There is not anything new here. What we are talking about here is, how with the help of special exercises and cognition to create an instrumental approach, to find out what a man can do with his psycho-energetics. Does he have anything that can be used as an instrument there? This is our position and our approach.

Next, we offer a special language. This language is the fundamental point, because, in order to structure somehow our vague experiences of the type: I feel something, it burns, it stings, it seems... we require this special language that is attuned to the psycho-energy sphere. This language is very simple. The dominance of this or other form of activity is denoted by the term level and coded as follows:

  • Level 1 - vital activity is dominating
  • Level 2 - psycho-emotional activity is dominating
  • Level 3 - mental activity is dominating
  • Level 4 - the psycho-energy instrument works in such a mode, where all three levels of activity are equally engaged and work in an accord.

Next, we introduce the notion of rhythms. What do we mean here? In this context, a rhythm is a perceptional characteristic of the environment, toward which the action is directed. It is the principal point that differentiates this technique from the others. In our language we take into account the fact that the functional, psycho-energetics, or psycho-emotional state is formed not only depending on the activity type, but also depending on the type of the environment toward which the activity is directed, and how this environment is perceived.

The notion of rhythm stems from theatrical arts, and its notion of tempo-rhythm. We coded into this term a certain form of perception of the environment, the dominance of a certain type of perception, and also the experience of being engaged with the environment, because any activity is accompanied by a feeling of an engagement with the environment.

We defined four rhythms, or, four types of resonance:

  • Rhythm A - perceiving the environment as a contiguous, expanding sphere, the rhythm of infinite.
  • Rhythm B - the rhythm of life, wave, flow.
  • Rhythm C - perceiving the environment as discreet, as a set of segregated objects, the symbol here is the impulse.
  • Rhythm D - perceiving the environment as destructive, chaotic, decaying.

These are the rhythms. Correspondingly, we can define sixteen combinations, sixteen words, sixteen code names for the sixteen functional states. During our training sessions, a certain semantic field is formed around those combinations, that allows to activate such a perception.

We have taught this technique thousands of people and the practice shows that this language is learned with ease, the code is concise, that the developed semantical fields are quite strong, however, the language alone is not enough. Why? Because, in order for an instrument to become useful, it must take upon a certain shape.

Then, the next problem to resolve is the problem of the form, of the design of this instrument, especially of such an unusual instrument as is our psycho-energy. We must use a certain archetypal image for that.

The image must be archetypal, that is, it must unconsciously bring to life a certain volume of deep associative chains, deep semantical fields so that the man could be immersed into it. We use the archetypal image of fire flower. A similar construction under the name of golden flower exists in one psycho-technique of Chinese origin. This technique pursue somewhat different goals, but there are certain similarities, too.

Why the flower of fire? It is very difficult to explain briefly, as quite a long path of comprehension led us to this archetype. But since the fire flower has passed all the experimental and practical tests, now we may simply state that the image of fire, of fire energy allows to solve the following two problems:

  1. To control psycho-emotional sphere, and psycho-energetics state
  2. At the same time, not to lead to any gains in blood circulation, unlike auto-training, where the feeling of warmness is a key point.

The process of burning is not at all a stranger to a human body, since the processes of oxidization happen in our body all the time, and oxidization is burning. There other allusions, and, due to them, a conceptual field is created. What can help to better realize the sensations described in the instruction? The absolutely precise sensation is given by the burning of intense sunlight.

The exact formula that we use in our instructions - fire energy.

You must be able to concentrate on the instructions that are given in our book. However, doing the exercises without the help of a qualified instructor is somewhat risky, because the individual correction is always needed. There could be some individual side-effects, that need to be explained and resolved correctly.

Journey through the functional states

  • Rhythm A is useful for "human to art" and "human to human" activities.
    • State 1A bears the feeling of the union with all Life on Earth. A necessity to move around the whole planet appears. This state is better suited for dreams than for actions.
    • State 2A is the state of lovers. The depth and affect of emotional experiences increases. It brings the range of feelings from universal love to universal sadness.
    • State 3A may be productive for solving global problems. In this state the boundaries of perception of the world, of other people, of oneself are expanded. Also the field of vision is expanded.
    • State 4A is the state of life joy. It is the hymn to life in all its variety, with all its pleasures and pains. It is the experience of depth and limitlessness of the World. The thoughts come out as images, not words.
  • Rhythm B is effective in "human to Nature" and "human to human" activities.
    • State 1B is the state of maximum physical power and healthy body. It is characterized by increased empathy to the Nature. This state is productive for mundane work, child care, and healthy cooking.
    • State 2B is the state of emotional comfort and love to everyone. This state is especially useful for conflict resolution, friendly talks, for becoming a linchpin, or singing lullabies.
    • State 3B is the state of a non-stop thinking process. It is quite useful for scientific work as well as for losing weight. In this state the man simply forgets about food - he is thinking... This state is used for the professions that requires contiguous intellectual endeavor.
    • State 4B is the state of harmony. It may be used for all professions where communication to living creatures is required. You are radiating tranquility. And you are perceived by others as a wise man.
  • Rhythm C is adequate in "human to machinery" and "human to science" professions
    • State 1C is the state of swift physical activity. You want to run, to jump. This state is optimal where maximum speed, precision, and rhythm is required.
    • State 2C is characterized by lambent humor, quickly changing mood, and emotional distance. The emotions are perceived as objects. This state is effective for psycho-analytical activities.
    • State 3C is the state of a clear and precise thinking. It is well suited for mathematics, programming, engineering, analytics, and so on. A good state to get into in order to win a scientific argument.
    • State 4C is the state of inner readiness and sense of purpose. It is the best state for any social activity, well described by veni, vidi, vici motto.
  • Rhythm D might be used in "human to art", "human to human" and "human to Nature" professions.
    • State 1D is representative of circle of life philosophy - the unhealthy and needless dying off, giving the chance for the new to be born.
    • State 2D is well known to professional wailers. They help people to pour their grief, which leads to the purification of the soul. And then the suffering transforms rather than destroys.
    • State 3D destroys the logic of habitual thinking. It may be helpful in accepting of the modern art.
    • State 4D is the dolorous solemnity. The death as the birth.

The rhythm as a quality of relations with the World

A rhythm is an integral part of both ourselves and our surroundings. We know yearly, daily, lunar, and many other cycles (or rhythms). We are capable to orient in time due to those rhythms. The sense of rhythm connects the perception of the inner and of the outer. The rhythm is the quality of relations with the World.

Many techniques are built upon sensual perception of space. It can be learned, indeed, yet, we are afraid of straining our feelings and we close those channels of perception.

When we study psycho-energetics we will learn to perceive what is around us, the "atmosphere" as they say in the theater. And the sense of rhythm will help us there.

If, with help of our senses we imagine an infinitely expanding sphere, we will tune up to the rhythm A, the rhythm of infinite.

If we tune up to the contiguous wave, that goes into us and out of us, we will sense the space as a process, and get into situation where everything is linked with everything else. This is the rhythm of life, rhythm B.

If we imagine discreet impulses that come in and out, the World will be represented as a certain mechanism. This is the rhythm C, the rhythm of finite.

If we tune up to chaos, derangement, confusion and decay, we will sense the rhythm D.

By mastering the language of rhythms, we will be able to control our perception of the quality of the environment. And this will allow us to resonate with the surroundings. And then the art of improvised creation of different states will open for us.

We go to uncertainty, to infinity, we are looking forward to novelty, we are engaging into the sound of space within and without.
